The SU-152 "Taran" was a Soviet self-propelled heavy assault gun used during World War II. It was designed to provide heavy fire support for infantry and to destroy enemy fortifications, tanks, and other armored vehicles. The vehicle was based on the earlier KV-1S tank chassis and was armed with a 152mm ML-20S howitzer. The gun had a range of 14 kilometers and could penetrate up to 200mm of armor at a distance of 1,000 meters. The SU-152 operated with a crew of five and had a top speed of 40 km/h on roads. It was used extensively on the Eastern Front by the Soviet Army and played a significant role in the Battle of Kursk in 1943. The vehicle was eventually replaced by newer designs such as the ISU-152.
